Interior Design
If you like the Corolla sedan or Hatchback, you’ll like the Corolla Cross’s interior. A near replica of the four-door Corolla’s, the cabin materials, layout, tech, and convenience features employed in the Cross are nearly identical. Though the Corolla Cross offers slightly more rear-seat room than the Corolla Hatchback—it’s about the same as the sedan, though—it ups cargo room by over 12 cubic feet.

EXTERIOR FEATURES
Corolla Cross buyers have a choice of traditional gasoline or hybrid powertrain, but this review pertains solely to the former. This version uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 169 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque and it passes that power off to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available as an option. Most drivers will find this power adequate at best. When pushed hard, the engine tends to get coarse and buzzy, but it never gets the Cross moving quickly. The Corolla Cross’s ride is affable, though, so buyers seeking comfort should be satisfied.
SECURITY & ENVIRONMENT
The Toyota Corolla Cross features a bevy of standard safety and driver assistance features on all models including adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, road sign assist, and auto high-beams. For more information about the Corolla Cross’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane-departure warning with accident avoidance system
- Standard adaptive cruise

Description
The Toyota Corolla arrived on our shores way back in 1968 and quickly earned a reputation for reliability and economy that continues to this day. The Corolla Cross packages those well-known Corolla essentials in a subcompact crossover body. Following in the Corolla’s footsteps, the Cross scores points for value but comes up short in terms of performance, excitement, and driving enjoyment. Its 169-hp four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission provide only sleepy acceleration. Its interior is simple, businesslike, and utilitarian. The Cross’s main advantages over the current Corolla sedan and Hatchback are its additional cargo room and the availability of all-wheel drive. In other words, it’s a straightforward transportation device in an SUV’s body. The Corolla Cross Hybrid (reviewed separately) is noticeably more powerful, much quicker, and returns significantly better fuel economy numbers, making it an alternative worth looking at for anyone considering the standard Cross.
